Born in Uberlandia, Brazil, in 1926, he holds a Bachelor of Theology from St. Serge Orthodox Seminary in Paris.
He was the director of the Balamand Clerical School and then the Patriarchal Vicar in Damascus. He also became the Vicar of the Metropolitan of Tripoli. He was ordained a priest in 1956 and served the parish of the Dormition in Alexandria, Egypt.
He was elected a Metropolitan on Zahleh, Baalbek, and Dependencies in the year 1966.
